Abstract
This study explored the perception and meaning of life and place of elderly males who have lived in an urban decline area for a long time. To this end, we visited Gamcheon Culture Village, one of the representative areas of the urban regeneration project, and conducted a preliminary survey for 3 months. In-depth individual interviews were conducted 2 ?3 times with 5 study participants, male elderly who have lived for more than 20 years. The interview was conducted as a life-historical narrative interview, focusing on questions about the daily life, residence, and place of older adults. The collected data were analyzed through a constant comparative method. Participants included the house in the village and perceived it as a place, and they used the identity that became regretful and lamentable in the process of taking root in the village, the ambivalent attitude that was the strength that survived the village, and the reflection on the village as the driving force for change. Based on the results of the study, community welfare policies for the elderly and residents in urban regeneration projects included elderly-friendly elements, transitioned to residents¡¯ perspective, revitalized active and idle spaces for visitors, prepared community care spaces using empty houses, and implemented lifelong education projects.
